Paul Boon: The importance of brain health and the burden of neurological disorders

In this session Paul Boon discusses the unmet needs in brain health, the high burden of neurological disorders and epilepsy, and the strategies being used to reduce the burden and improve brain health.

The burden of neurological disorders is the highest among 21 disease categories worldwide,1 and despite recent progress, epilepsy remains a major cause of disability and mortality, with a prevalence of 621.5 per 100 000.2 Significant gains in reducing the burden of epilepsy are expected from improved access to treatment in low-income countries and new, effective drugs.2

Prof. Paul Boon is the chairman and senior full professor of neurology at Ghent University Hospital, director of 4Brain at Ghent University and the president of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN).
